Taking up a modest portion of one acre in Lanesborough, Massachusetts, the Beetle Buds nursery is its first year of operation in the Berkshires. Aiming to be conscientious stewards of the land, we are just as excited to serve the local native plant community as we are to serve the insects and wildlife on nursery grounds. As mentioned across our website, we are adamant about not using pesticides whatsoever, but instead, plan to generate a healthy micro-ecosystem by converting a formerly mowed acre into a diverse array of native gardens.

Over the next couple of market seasons, we look forward to learning more about the community’s interests and taking it into consideration as we expand. We’d love to hear from native gardeners, newbies and vets alike, about garden goals, species recommendations, and more. So please, don’t be shy at market! But if you do prefer to contact us digitally, you can always email or message us on Instagram, whichever is most convenient for you.

Our Nursery

How We Grow

Due to not yet having a greenhouse, we rely on winter sowing techniques and temporary growing structures. Using cold frames and low tunnels, we are able to germinate species early in the season, with the goal of having Spring inventory for markets. For 2025, we anticipate having over 65 different species available for sale, the majority of which are flowers and grasses.

We are also hard at work establishing a shrub and tree inventory, however, due to slower growth rates, we expect most of these becoming available in ‘26 - ‘27 (with a few, quick growing exceptions).

Plant Pickups

Because Beetle Buds is a small scale nursery dedicated to serving Berkshire County, we are not set up for shipping plants. Instead, we offer pickup at weekly farmers markets May through October.

If our market dates don’t work for your schedule, we also offer pickup in Lanesborough, Monday through Thursday, 10am to 4pm. After placing your order, you will be provided confirmation, pickup instructions and contact information if there are any questions or issues with your order.

We simply ask that you place your order a couple of days before pickup, so that we have adequate time to prepare your plants.

Container Recycling

Hoping to limit the introduction of new plastics into circulation, Beetle Buds tries to recycle as many containers as possible, whether for seed starting or transplanting.

We will carry a recycling bin at both our market booth as well as our pickup location in Lanesborough. Whether you are a returning customer or first time buyer, please feel free to bring us your extra pots or containers, whether they came from us or another nursery. We promise not to ask if they formerly housed non-natives!

Please note the associated photo, displaying our recycled-material winter sowing method from a few years ago, is no longer how we germinate our plants. We do not accept milk cartons, salad containers, etc. at this time—only nursery pots. We will make an announcement if this changes.
